Andrew Hill, Compulsion!!!!!
“Hill created a unique idiom that utilized chromatic, modal, and occasionally ‘free’ improvisation. Although usually categorized as ‘avant-garde’, Hill’s music bears little resemblance to the free atonality and extended improvisations of Cecil Taylor and others. Like his contemporaries Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, and Eric Dolphy, Hill was considered to be a cusp figure: too ‘out’ to be ‘in’, but too ‘in’ to be ‘out’.”
Who can’t relate to that?
That said, 1) It’s getting colder and that’s fine. Fall is sublime in South Korea, summer is a sweaty nightmare. 2) The semester is already half-way over. 3) I need a new laptop. This one is starting to feel like it might just give out at any second. It’s a Toshiba and I’d never heard great things about them but hey, three years of quality service so I can’t complain too much. 4) My MLB playoff predictions were laughably wrong. So now, I’m going to root for the Cubs but bet money on Toronto. 5) It’s not that Hillary “stole” the debate from Bernie (they both did well) but that the mainstream media has been proclaiming a HILLARY TRAINWRECK for months now and all she had to do was show up and look like the fairly competent adult that she is to regain momentum and remind people that the GOP candidates are a pack of rabid buffoons, top to bottom.
American politics are completely stupid and I spend way too much time thinking about them. Then again, they do matter.
