Is the Vice President’s daughter a faggot? Is the child she’s soon to have the son or daughter of faggots? Are faggots unfit for public office? Should faggots be rounded up and forced to wear identifying badges?
Coulter being Coulter is nothing new. What is new, and what you won’t hear about in the “librul” media is that she isn’t a fringe figure to Republicans. She’s both a rockstar and a king-maker (Greenwald). She was batting clean-up for the largest annual gathering of “conservatives” in the nation, headlined by Dick Cheney himself. Apparently, she was a bigger draw than either Giuliani or Romney.
Just watch his excitement as Romney introduces her (and she responded by announcing her endorsement of his campaign). It’s disgusting. And yet, once again, Coulter is allowed be Coulter, because she’s a comedian. Or a satirist. I forget, because it’s impossible to tell when a roomful of college Republicans hoot and holler at a fag joke.
You’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t when dealing with someone as pathetically loathsome, hateful, and empty as her. If you pay attention, you’re empowering her, according to some, giving her more attention than she deserves. What you need to do is just ignore her and hope she’ll go away.
In theory, I couldn’t agree more. However, as Greenwald points out, and gay Republican Andrew Sullivan as well, Coulter is not a fringe actor. According to Sullivan, “She is the new Republicanism. The sooner people recognize this, the better.” How much longer will the media buy into the charade that she’s just a harmless gadfly or “political performer,” and thereby excuse her bile?
Sullivan has another post here regarding conservative bloggers who have condemned Coulter’s slur. Bully for them but frankly, who cares? Should we be grateful that five-percent of right-wing writers have a conscience, that they’re fully capable of acting like humans? Where were they during the last half decade, when Coulter was routinely calling for the assasination of Supreme Court justices, converting all Muslims to Christianity, or saying that 9/11 widows were “self-obsessed”?
You don’t get to have it both ways Republicans. If she can drop f-bombs because she’s Ms. Jokey Ha-Ha, then please support her by checking out her gigs at the local Chuckle Hut. However, if you put her on a bill with the Vice President of the United States, past or present, and two of the men who hope to be the next Republican nominee, you’ve got more problems than just questionable taste. You either condone and approve of who she is and what she says, or you smack her rhetoric down, hard, by distancing yourself from her forever.
I won’t be holding my breath.
Update: John Edwards responds. I only wish he’d swung back harder, but it’s classy enough. Interestingly, following a few weeks of MoDo-fueled drama between Obama and Clinton, this puts Edwards back on peoples’ radars. Well played. And it’s making him campaign money.
And by the way, why is a single person in her 40’s throwing around asperions regarding the sexuality of others? Further, John Edwards stayed with his wife during her battle with cancer. The same can’t be said of Newt Gingrich.
